About Tideswell

Tideswell is a charming, expansive village nestled in the heart of the White Peak, surrounded by some of the area's most stunning limestone uplands. The village boasts an array of independent shops, pubs, and cafes, making it a delightful spot to visit. Dominating the village skyline is its magnificent church, known as the Cathedral of the Peak, a fitting title for such an impressive structure.

Tideswell has a rich history, stretching back to pre-Roman times, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the parish of Hope. The village flourished in the Middle Ages, benefiting from lead mining and wool production. This wealth is evident in the grandeur of its church. By the 19th century, Tideswell became known for its thriving textile industry, with nearby mills in Cressbrook and Litton producing cotton, while several factories within the village were dedicated to weaving silk.

At the heart of the village stands the Church of St. John the Baptist, built entirely in the 14th century. The church is renowned for its striking wooden carvings, brasses, and monuments, as well as its tall, clear glass windows, which allow natural light to flood the interior, creating a uniquely airy and bright atmosphere.

Tideswell is home to the highly anticipated Food Festival, held every May. The event showcases a wide variety of food from local producers, along with stalls, cookery demonstrations, and entertainment. Established in 2009 through the Taste of Tideswell project, which was supported by the Big Lottery Fund and the BBC’s Village SOS series, the festival was created to promote local shops and food producers. In addition to the festival, the Taste of Tideswell project has facilitated the opening of a School of Food, offering subsidized cookery and brewery courses, as well as the creation of a community garden. The project also introduced the "Tideswell Made" quality mark, which identifies exceptional local produce and goods.

Tideswell Wakes Week, a much older tradition, has been celebrated for nearly 750 years. This event, which takes place in late June, aligns with the village’s annual Well Dressing ceremony and the church’s Festival for St. John the Baptist.

On the village’s outskirts lies Tideswell Dale, a picturesque limestone gorge within a Nature Reserve. Part of the Wye Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest, the dale is notable for its unique geology, grasslands, and woodlands. It is home to a wide variety of wildflowers and butterflies, including the small heath and common blue species, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts.
